Having a pricing document is a very helpful document to have available when requesting a quotation from a tradesperson

Pricing documents can vary greatly depending on the procurement route you choose. If you’ve a quantity surveyor involved in the project the quantity surveyor will create a document called a Bill of Quantities

What’s a Bill of Quantities?

A Bill of Quantities is a very detailed pricing document that contains a description of the works required along with the quantity of work required.

For example

Supply and fit pre-primed 100mm skirtings boards     150m

The above outlines that on this specific 150 metres of 100mm pre-primed skirtings are required and the contractor is to allow for supplying the skirting boards and fitting the skirting boards. Within the bill of quantities there’s a column for the contractor to insert a unit rate. A unit rate is the cost per metre of supply and fitting the skirting boards as outlined under the description

Other pricing documents are less formal. They may be less descriptive and usually categorised by including all of the items relevant to each trade together

Overall having a uniform pricing document in place for contractors to price proves to be invaluable when you put a project out to tender. It also makes the job of pricing the project much easier for a contractor. Pricing documents enable a client or their representative to analyse the quotes received on a like for like basis

Pricing documents are then used as the basis of interim payments. A contractor can insert a percentage claim against each item contained in the pricing document and the client can assess if they have completed the amount of work they have claimed for
